Crane Cages
Overhead crane cages have a variety of uses, utilised to safely transport materials and goods, and, in some specialised instances, be employed as a mobile work platform.
Such crane cages are designed to be employed by way of overhead crane operation; positioning is often done by forklifts, with many crane cages featuring forklift tine pockets to allow for easy transportation and manoeuvring.
Crane cages are used across industrial environments such as construction sites, warehouses, manufacturing plants, and engineering workshops, and are seen as essential for many material handling operations. Crane cages help to improve productivity and operational efficiency, mitigating risk to the business and minimising downtime by ensuring the safe distribution of the goods under load.
Crane cages can be used anytime there is a need to shift material en masse via an overhead crane; or whenever there is a need for personnel to safely work at height on a crane-operated mobile work platform, where a forklift-driven man cage is not suitable or cannot reach the space.
These mobile work platforms are commonly known as man cages, and are often used by maintenance personnel to provide easy access to otherwise inaccessible heights without other means to do so.
As New Zealand’s overhead crane experts, we supply a range of overhead crane attachments, taking a selective approach when it comes to choosing our crane cages for sale (and crane man cages for sale). We have used our extensive industry knowledge to handpick reputable, robust, high quality brands and manufacturers, ensuring that our crane cages last the distance, and do the job right, first time.
At first glance, many crane cages look not too dissimilar from their forklift counterparts, several of which are employed as mobile work platforms (and often referred to as “man cages”).
Given the way in which a crane cage is attached to an overhead crane, with the single connection line (which can sometimes have multiple connection points, depending on the design of the crane attachment), it is advisable to only use designated crane man cages as mobile work platforms.
As such, we strongly recommend that all crane cages supplied should adhere to the relevant AS 1418.17 standards, that all personnel should wear safety harnesses affixed to the appropriate safety harness anchor points, and that operators should be familiar with the WorkSafe Working At Height regulations.
In some instances, a forklift operated mobile work platform (otherwise known as a forklift man cage) may be appropriate and applicable, depending on the circumstances.
As with any overhead crane attachment, extreme care must be taken to ensure the safety of personnel and property, and it is no different with crane cages – especially man cage crane cage attachments.
Any misuse may result in extensive damage to personnel and/or property, with considerable fatal risk being posed by the use of overhead crane cage mobile work platforms. Please ensure that all operators are well trained before the equipment is put to the task, and, should any questions arise, please feel free to contact us directly and we will be happy to assist or point you in the right direction.
Crane cages can play an important role in many material handling operations; but, as with all heavy machinery, care must be taken to ensure that the appropriate technical limitations of the equipment are respected and its use is as intended.
Our knowledgeable team of problem solvers can help you to choose the appropriate overhead crane cage, improving the versatility and effectiveness of your material handling operation by ensuring you have the “right tool for the job”.
