Stewart & Cavalier | Low Headroom Electric Chain Hoist

Low Headroom Electric Chain Hoist

The Requirement:

Stewart & Cavalier are mechanical and manufacturing engineers who design, analyse, manufacture and maintain mechanical, industrial and engineered products and systems. Their full-service engineering site features a manufacturing workshop of over 2,000 square metres serviced by overhead gantry cranes, along with rolling, forming, guillotining and profile cutting facilities and a comprehensive in-house CNC machine shop for turning and milling.

They approached Stratalign Limited, the New Zealand agents for RWM, while working on a crane build for an installation operating within a low headroom environment. They required a lifting solution capable of handling the specified loads while also providing lateral load movement, allowing the starting position of the lift to be adjusted as needed during operation.

The Challenge:

The constraints of the installation site presented a significant engineering challenge. Due to the length of the bridge required to span the working area, the corresponding beam size needed to support the structure reduced the available clearance beneath it. This meant that a standard hoist configuration would not provide sufficient hook height to safely and effectively lift the required loads.

Maximising the distance between the ground and the beam was essential, but this had to be achieved without compromising on lifting capacity or the ability to move loads laterally with precision.

The Solution:

Drawing on our partnership with RWM Italy, Stratalign Limited supplied an ultra low headroom electric chain hoist in an RE series electric trolley configuration. This configuration is specifically designed for applications where maximum available height between the ground and the beam is critical, while still allowing the load to be repositioned laterally along the beam. The electric motor driving the trolley provides highly precise translation, giving the operator full control over load positioning.

By providing this hoist and trolley solution, Stratalign enabled Crane Builders Stewart & Cavalier to complete their crane build with confidence that the headroom restrictions of the installation had been overcome, ensuring the required loads could be lifted and moved safely and efficiently within the available envelope. The project demonstrates the value of pairing RWM's specialist hoist range with local technical support and supply through Stratalign in New Zealand.
