Gantry Crane Accessories

Overhead gantry crane accessories are an integral part of a larger gantry crane system, and are commonplace in many material handling operations such as light and heavy industry, construction, shipping and logistics, and manufacturing.

Known for their ability to move heavy, cumbersome loads with ease, gantry cranes have earned a reputation over the years for their robustness and versatility. Adding to this versatility is the vast range of gantry crane accessories available, allowing each system to be tailored to different applications and loads, increasing functionality and improving efficiency, while safely mitigating unnecessary risk.

Which gantry crane accessories are best suited for your requirements?

Gantry cranes can be equipped with various accessories to increase their functionality and safety, such as load limiters, anti-collision devices, spreader bars, and more - but which overhead gantry crane accessories are best suited for your requirements?

Here are some of the most common gantry crane accessories:

Hoist Gantry Crane Accessories

Used to lift and lower heavy loads, hoists are an essential component of any crane. There are many different types of hoists available, including wire rope hoists, chain hoists, and electric hoists.

Spreader Beam Lifting Bar Gantry Crane Accessories

A spreader beam (otherwise known as a lifting bar) is a device that is used to distribute the weight of a load evenly across multiple lifting points - particularly useful when lifting large and awkwardly shaped loads, as it can help to prevent the load from swinging or becoming unstable. Spreader beams are available in different sizes and configurations.

Trolley Gantry Crane Accessories

A trolley is used to move the hoist along the length of the gantry beam, allowing it to pick up and transport loads from one area to another. There are several different types of trolleys available, including manual trolleys and motorised trolleys. Manual trolleys require the operator to physically push the hoist along the beam, while motorised trolleys use a motor to move the hoist along the beam. Motorised trolleys are typically more efficient and can help to improve productivity in the workplace.

Safety Gantry Crane Accessories

Given the heightened risks presented with the usage of overhead gantry cranes, safety is one of the most important considerations when determining appropriate accessories and system configuration. While there are many different types of safety gantry crane accessories available, here are two of the most common:

Anti-collision devices

Anti-collision devices can be used with gantry crane systems to prevent the crane from colliding with other objects or equipment. Such devices use sensors to detect nearby objects and will automatically stop the crane if it comes too close to a potential obstacle, helping to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace.

Load limiters

Load limiters are another important safety accessory for gantry cranes, which, in simple terms, prevent the crane from lifting loads that are too heavy, avoiding otherwise treacherous situations caused by overloading, and helping to protect the structural integrity of the crane, improving its longevity.

Palmerston North City Council - Case Study

The Requirement

This busy waste water plant in Palmerston North needed a custom-made crane system to be designed, manufactured and installed with minimal disruption to their operation.

The Challenge

The original Pump Station building had been commissioned many years previous without any lifting mechanisms in place to maintain screens, pumps and motors. Maintenance on the existing equipment was due to be undertaken so a tight timeframe was of the essence.

Solution to a long-standing challenge

As a solution to a long standing challenge, Cabtec Ltd purchased a Fezer vacuum lifter from Stratalign Limited, for processing product through a processing line. Prior to the purchase, the process had required manual handling, which in today's environment, is not a sustainable option.

More than one option for this solution was investigated by Cabtec with the decision being a vacuum lifter as the winning choice. Cabtec's spokesman recalls, Cabtec selected Stratalign as the winning supplier, based on their ability to provide the technical and professional advice, along with what Cabec considered a top quality product for a competitive price.

The ease of operation is facilitated by the very smooth running bearings and movement points, integral to this structurally sound piece of kit. He continues, From the day the order was placed, the Stratalign team kept us updated with progress, to the day the machine was installed.

The installation process was organized in such a way, by Stratalign, that it caused absolute minimal disruption to a very busy working environment during normal working hours.
