What do you use a 2 ton crane for?

2 ton cranes fit the light crane category and are widely used in all types of industry to remove manual handling from processes or to safely lift and manoeuvre loads of up to 2,000kg.

There are many different crane systems that can fit into the 2 ton crane category - these systems are versatile lifting tools which can be simple through to complex in design, from monorails, jib and davit cranes, to made to measure workstation cranes through to the fully fledged wall to wall overhead travelling gantry cranes. A 2 ton crane can be designed as free standing, on runways mounted the the building columns, or suspended from the roof structure, with either a fixed location or portable base, depending on the desired application.

Which 2 ton crane is best for your requirements?

As with many situations, the “best” solution for your requirements is unique and dependent on your industry, your workspace, your application needs, the size, shape, and form of the material or components you are looking to lift, and its weight.

There are a wide range of industrial cranes that are capable of lifting weight capacities up to 2 tons - the most common types of 2 ton crane include:

  • Column mounted jib crane - A horizontal beam cantilevered off a free standing, floor mounted column. The beam and load can be rotated in up to a 360 degree arc, depending on column placement. Column-mounted jib cranes distinguish themselves by their strong design and their smoothness of movement. This is achieved with a special console construction using bush bearings and trolleys with nylon castors.
  • Wall mounted jib crane - A horizontal beam mounted off of the wall, usually with up to a 180 degree arc. The robust steel consoles in the wall mounted jib cranes incorporate bush bearings and the special transport trolleys with large-dimensioned castors, these move loads effortlessly and minimise the work processes.
  • Workstation overhead crane - Light freestanding or suspended overhead cranes with a capacity of up to 2 tons. For use above specific plant/machinery or processes in a factory, processing plant or workshop.
  • Girder crane - Also known as bridge cranes, girder cranes are supported on an elevated track system connected to the wall columns that run along the length of the building. Girder/bridge cranes have either a single or dual girder bridge spanning the width of the building that the hoist trolley travels across.
  • Gantry crane - An overhead travelling crane which is free-standing, supported on rigid steel legs with wheels that run along the length of a building in a floor mounted track system to keep the crane moving in a straight and parallel line. Gantry cranes have either a single or dual girder bridge spanning the width of the building that the hoist trolley travels across.
  • Monorail crane - Unlike girder or gantry cranes, monorail cranes have no moving girder or bridge to provide side-to-side movement of the hoist. Monorails hoists can travel in one axis only, although they can traverse radius, not limited to straight lines.
  • Portable gantry crane - A manually movable overhead gantry crane that allows the gantry to be positioned almost anywhere. Portable gantry cranes can have fixed legs or swivel castor wheels to allow the gantry to be moved under load.

To further highlight the differences between crane systems in the 2 ton lifting capacity range, we have put together a detailed overview of several key types:

Workstation overhead crane systems

Stratalign’s light overhead workstation gantry crane systems allow for endless made-to-measure configurations for loads up to 2,000kg across a wide range of industrial, mechanical and engineering machinery applications. These systems’ profiles have the best weight carrying capacity ratio in the world which ensures maximised suspension distances. Less steel supporting construction, the number of suspension components and installation time leads to significant savings.

Whether single track, single bridge or double bridge design, the use of our versatile components allow the crane system to be adapted and designed to to your specific load, reach and layout requirements.

The load capacity can be doubled and double tracked bridges can be supplied for higher lifting capacities - a perfectly optimised solution can be fabricated by combining steel and aluminium profiles to meet any exacting requirements (with theoretically no limitation on span length and maximum capacity rating).

Workstation cranes are renowned for their smooth movement and effective performance, improving the handling of the load and ease-of-use for the operator, which in turn reduces fatigue and increases productivity. The large range of accessories covers almost any requirement and guarantees a high level of operational safety, while keeping investment costs in check.

Girder (bridge) cranes

Also known as bridge cranes, girder cranes are precisely engineered, heavy-duty overhead travelling crane systems. These cranes are supported by tracks that are mounted in elevated positions built into the building’s support columns and generally run along the long length of the room or building.

Featuring a three-dimensional construction, a girder crane operates by lifting from a trolley hoist suspended from the bridge profile, located between the track profiles, allowing the suspended load to be manoeuvred anywhere within the X and Y axis of the tracks and bridge movements.

By giving you endless ability to manoeuvre within the workplace, the girder crane unit provides greater safety for personnel and transported goods, and increases the efficiency of your material handling operation.

A 2 ton girder crane would be at the light end of girder crane capacities, with lifting capacities of up to 200 tons possible.

Similar to their single girder counterparts, dual girder crane systems maximise the available space in your work area with their three-dimensional construction and double girder design.

Travelling overhead girder crane systems are suitable for a wide range of indoor material handling operations, and can be found in workshops, factories, mining sites, steelworks, automotive fabrication bodyshops, and more. Travelling overhead girder crane systems are a robust and enduring solution for modern heavy lifting needs.

Gantry crane

Gantry cranes operate in much the same way as girder cranes, but the key difference is that they are free-standing, supported by rigid leg structures with wheels that run along the floor. Often these wheels run in tracks to keep the crane running straight and parallel.

Similar to their girder crane counterparts, a 2 ton travelling overhead gantry crane would be at the light end of the gantry crane capacity range - on the higher end of the scale, gantry cranes have been rated to lift up to 200 tons in some instances.

Portable gantry crane

Portable gantry cranes provide a mobile lifting capability, with a degree of flexibility and versatility that travelling overhead girder or gantry cranes cannot match.

The 2 ton range of portable gantry cranes can have fixed legs and feet or heavy-duty castor wheels to allow for easy positioning of the gantry crane and movement of the crane with a suspended load. This is very useful in many machinery maintenance applications. Portable gantry cranes of up to 2 ton capacity can have adjustable height options.

What is the difference between a single girder and dual girder crane?

A single girder gantry crane (sometimes referred to as a "girder crane") has a single beam called a girder or bridge that spans from side to side across the two runways or tracks that run down the length of the building. The lifting hoist is connected to a manual or powered trolley that runs underneath the girder or bridge, using the bottom flange of the girder as a track for the trolley. Despite the typically simpler design in comparison to their dual girder counterparts, single girder cranes are commonly used for lifting capacities up to 15 tons.

A double girder gantry crane (also called a "dual girder" or "double girder crane") provides two advantages over a single girder crane system:

  • Increased lifting capacity due to the extra carrying capacity of the second girder/bridge.
  • Increased lifting height when the hoist trolley is mounted in a saddle between the two girders, rather than underslung beneath the girder. This is useful where there is low headroom available and the maximum lifting height possible the building is required.

If your warehouse, factory or workshop has the headroom then a top running crane may be the choice for you to give maximum lifting height. If you have minimal headroom capacity then options such as an underslung or free standing 2 ton crane will be preferable.

A safety note on the installation and operation of 2 ton cranes

Given the inherent risks involved, 2 ton overhead cranes should be operated by qualified lifting crane operators. These operators should be competent in the usage of lifting equipment and crane systems, and aware of safety regulations and operational procedures.

Administer regular inspections and maintenance as required on all your crane mechanisms and ensure the load weight does not exceed the recommended capacity.
